Recently, there's been a lot of talk about NPR - a news reporter being fired for anti-Muslim reports. But more recently, Sarah Palin claiming that Congress shouldn't fund NPR.
Now, as an advocate for free speech, it would be totally hypocritical for me to suggest that Ms. Palin be silenced...but I'm also for positive action. I don't like bullies, and as a matter of principle, I'm compelled to fight them - but I'm not going to sling mud. I'm going to show my support by making a public stand...and encourage you to do the same.
(For those of you who are on the other side of the aisle, let me just link to this as a powerful reminder of why this country is great)
So throughout the month of November, I'm going to run a mini-fundraiser to raise funds for WBEZ, the local NPR station here in Chicago. (Full disclosure - I've been a contributor to their Vocalo service, and have often praised their Sound Opinions podcast). So from now through November 30th, I'm hoping to raise $666 for public radio.I'm using this neat-o Chipin plugin (and there will be one in this blog's sidebar - don't worry, I'll post reminders).
(And yes, I'll take a picture and post the money order once the money's collected, but if I don't hit $666...I'll make a donation anyway. Even if it's only $5).
So feel free to make a donation...and if you can't, forward this article via Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed, Digg, or any other social media channel. Blog about it.Spread the word any way you can.
Because free speech is worth fighting for.

I thought NPR should have fired Juan Williams, not for the particular remark, but because he's been an empty suit shilling for FOX Noise. But I think that NPR was ham-fisted in the manner they handled the firing.
